KNTQ Has More Supply Waiting Than Trading

Kinetiq trades at a $125,7m market cap against a $398,0m FDV with 31,6% of supply circulating — a 3,2x FDV/mcap ratio, the 85th percentile for liquid staking. Holder revenue of $0,8m a year covers 0,3% of the supply still to come; buyers, not revenue, will absorb the unlocks.

Kinetiq (KNTQ) supply overhang — cover

Two thirds of KNTQ hasn't reached the market yet. The holders who are already here share $0,8m a year.

Kinetiq trades at a $125,7m market cap against a $398,0m fully diluted valuation. Only 31,6% of supply circulates. At today's price, the tokens still to come are worth $272,3m, more than twice the value of everything on the market now.

The overhang is extreme even for liquid staking

A 3,2x FDV/mcap ratio means little in isolation. Against peers, it stands out. The median across 26 Liquid Staking protocols is 1,4x, so a typical peer already has most of its supply on the market. Kinetiq sits at the 85th percentile.

Users pay $25,4m. Holders get $0,8m.

LayerAnnualWhat it is
Fees paid by users\$25,4mEverything users paid
Supply side\$21,5m84,6% of fees, paid out to stakers and liquidity providers
Protocol revenue\$3,9m15% take rate on fees
Revenue to KNTQ holders\$0,8m21,5% of protocol revenue

The split is built into liquid staking. The product is yield, and yield goes to stakers. The token's own cash flow is thin by design.

At a $125,7m market cap, KNTQ trades at 149,3x holder revenue, 32,1x protocol revenue and 5,0x fees, on $866,7m of TVL. The price is up 16,3% over 30 days while monthly fees fell 31,4%.

One detail changes how to read the $0,8m. Holder payouts were zero until April 2026, so the annual figure covers seven months of distributions, not twelve. The flow is new and its history is short.

Revenue won't absorb this supply. Buyers will.

Here's the arithmetic a founder should run. $0,8m of holder revenue a year against $272,3m of supply still to come covers about 0,3% of the overhang per year.

The useful question, then, is who buys the unlocks and why. Demand for a liquid staking token comes from governance weight, incentives or an expected rise in holder payouts. If none of these grows faster than supply, the price takes the adjustment.

The calendar decides how hard the overhang lands

How much monthly demand it takes to absorb the emission depends on two things this snapshot doesn't lock: the unlock schedule and who receives each tranche. We don't publish an absorption figure without them. A guessed calendar is how overhang analysis goes wrong.

Check these before drawing conclusions (DefiLlama unlocks, project docs):

  • Cliffs or linear release. One large cliff hits the market differently from steady monthly unlocks.
  • Recipients. Team and early investors with a near-zero cost basis sell differently from ecosystem incentives that get restaked.
  • Staking flows. If unlocked tokens move straight into staking, the market feels less of them.
  • Concentration. Count how much of the next 12 months lands in a single quarter.

A 3,2x overhang isn't always a red flag

It's manageable when:

  • The remaining supply sits in treasury or ecosystem reserve with no fixed release date
  • Emissions scale with measurable usage, such as staking rewards tied to TVL
  • Holder revenue grows into the dilution, which seven months of data can't confirm yet

It turns dangerous when large team and investor tranches unlock on fixed dates while holder revenue stays flat.

Four levers we'd test in a redesign

For a team in Kinetiq's position, these are the levers worth modelling:

  1. Re-cut cliffs into longer graded vesting, so no single month carries the unlock.
  2. Tie part of future emission to milestones such as holder revenue or TVL, not to the calendar.
  3. Route more of protocol revenue to holders (21,5% today) or to buybacks timed against unlock windows.
  4. Publish the full calendar and recipient list. Unknown supply gets a bigger discount than known supply.

Each lever has a price. Longer vesting needs investor consent. A higher holder share takes runway from the treasury. Milestone-based emission is harder to explain to the market.

In the UAE the same test applies under VARA in Dubai and ADGM in Abu Dhabi: a token with a large locked supply and thin holder cash flow reads as a speculative virtual asset, and both regulators look at the unlock schedule and value accrual when a project applies to participate in the market. An overhang is not a US-only concern.

What this means if it's your token

Before TGE, an overhang is a design choice, and fixing it costs a spreadsheet. After TGE, you can't shrink supply you've already promised. You can only change when and how it reaches the market.

8Blocks Tokenomics Audit stress-tests vesting, unlock calendars and value accrual before the next raise or listing. If you're still designing, Tokenomics Development builds the schedule with the overhang in view from day one.
